(For those who already have received either:
Consumer Law in a Box CD-ROM, or
the NCLC Consumer Bankruptcy Law Manual)

(Click instead on: Bankruptcy Disk , for information on our completely automated bankruptcy solution. All products contain the latest Petition and Statement of Financial Affairs, etc)

For the most up-to-date instructions re troubleshooting, click on the file D:\LawDisks\Trouble.PDF on your NCLC CD-ROM. This has the most recent information in Adobe Acrobat format.

There are three different bankruptcy programs on the CD from the national COnsumer Law Center, Boston. You need to choose which one fits with your word processing software The three programs are designed to work with:

Please click on one of the above "versions" for instructions on how to install it. If you have more than one of the above programs, we suggest that you choose version 1, WordPerfect for Windows, as this version has more features than the others. One file which ought to work for almost everybody is D:|LawDisks\BlankPet.wpd. You may wish to print out this page for reference.

Some formats which are not supported are MS "Works" and Macintosh. However, Mac Users can run our programs if they install Windows emulation software. MS Works does not support "tables," so we suggest those users upgrade to MS Word for Windows.

The text file "ReadMe" on the Law Disks diskette describes how to Install the files which pertain to your word processor. The file "How-to" is the same file, but formatted as a WordPerfect 5.1 document for nicer printing. Please also refer to the License and disclaimers which are contained in those files. Note: Bankruptcy Forms are designed for use by attorneys; our products do not contain all the disclosure s which are required for "bankruptcy petition preparers."

Bankruptcy Forms, NCLC Edition:
Version 1, for WordPerfect 6.0A or 6.1 or 7.0 or 8.0 or 9.0 for Windows.

You need to know your CD-ROM drive letter (usually this is D:\, but it could be different for you):

Run WordPerfect. Start with a blank document screen. Choose the top menu for "Tools"..."Macro"..."Play"
Next, the "File Name" you type depends on your version of WordPerfect:

For WordPerfect 6.0A, or 6.1, or 7.0 "Legal Edition" (Win 3.1), type the file name: D:\LAWDISKS\INSTALL6
Then press "Play" or press the [ENTER] key.

For WordPerfect 7.0 for Windows 95/98/NT
type the file name: D:\LAWDISKS\INSTALL7
Then press "Play" or press the [ENTER] key.

For WordPerfect 8.0 for Windows 95/98/NT,
type the file name: D:\LAWDISKS\INSTALL8
Then press "Play" or press the [ENTER] key.

For WordPerfect 9.0 for Windows 95/98/NT,
type the file name: D:\LAWDISKS\INSTALL9
Then press "Play" or press the [ENTER] key.

The appropriate INSTALL macro copies the relevant files into your macro directory, and customizes Bankruptcy Forms for your law office, state, etc. Click here if you got an error message during the Install macro.

(Note that you need version 6.0A or later of WordPerfect for Windows. When you start WordPerfect, the version number is displayed in the opening screen. If you have version 6.0, you must get an upgrade from Corel/WordPerfect. Note also that "WordPerfect 7 Legal Edition" is really the same as WordPerfect 6.1 for Windows 3.1).

After Installation, to run the WordPerfect for Windows version of Bankruptcy Forms, choose top menu "Tools"..."Macro"...."Play"
then type BANKFORM and press "Play" or hit [ENTER].

If BankForm will not run, then reboot your computer, or at least turn WordPerfect off and on again. (Sometimes your computer thinks a file is "in use" when it is actually not in use.) Be sure that your "WPWIN" folder is showing when you run the BankForm macro (not the CD-ROM folder).

If you have trouble installing the Dec. 2000 version, click here.
One crash-proof alternative (which is simpler but less automated) is to copy the file D:\LawDisks\BlankPet.wpd, which is simply the Petition/Schedules in WordPerfect 5.1 format, and in a nice Times font

Bankruptcy Forms, NCLC Edition:
Version 2, for Microsoft Word for Windows, ver. 6.0 or 7.0 or Word 95 or Word 97 or Word 2000 uses three files, which should be copied into your User Template directory/folder:

  • BANKRUPT.DOT (Petition and Schedules)
  • BCY_POC .FRM (Proof of claim for creditor)
  • BCY_BUS .FRM (Chapter 7 Business questions)

To install, you simply copy the file "BANKRUPT.DOT" (and the other two) from the Bankruptcy Forms diskette into your Word Template directory.

First find and write down the path to the directory for your Word template files. While running Word, Choose the "Tools" menu, then choose "Options," then choose "File Locations." You should then see the path to the User Template directory. For example: C:\ProgramFiles\MicrosoftOffice\Templates, (Word 97) -or-
C:\Windows\ApplicationData\.MicrosoftOffice\Templates, (Word 2000).

How to copy the files using:

Using Windows 3.1 File Manager:

At the Windows Program Manager, double click on the MAIN icon. Then double click on the FILE MANAGER icon. Then click on the picture of Drive D:\ (your CD-ROM drive could be a higher letter, too) Click on the file "Bankrupt.dot" so that it is highlighted. Pull down the "Files" menu. Then pull down the "Copy" menu. In the "From" space, type in D:\LawDisks\BANKRUPT.DOT. Next, type in the "To" space the path and directory for your Word Template directory. For example: C:\winword\template\bankrupt.dot. (Important: your Template directory may be different.) Choose "OK" to start the copying. Then pull down the upper left box to close the File Manager, then close Main.

After Installation above, to RUN the MS Word for Windows version:

Choose the "File" Menu, then choose "New." When the "New" Dialog Box appears, scroll down the list until you see "BANKRUPT," then choose BANKRUPT. Then a copy of the Template Bankrupt is on screen for you to fill in. There are helpful hints and tips at the end of the document. Note: you do not "Open" the actual template file unless you wish to make permanent changes in it (which is possible to do, to customize it for your firm and state).

Installation in Word 2000 or Word 97 or Word 95 or Word 7 for Windows 95/98/ME/NT:

To install, you simply copy the file "BANKRUPT.DOT" from the CD-ROM into your Word Template directory.

First you need to know what your Word Template folder (directory) is. While Word 7 is running, choose

"Tools" then "Options" then "File Locations." Next to the line "User Templates" you will see the name of the folder/directory. This can vary, based on how you set up your copy of Word. For example, if you have Word 95, your folder might be: C:\MSOffice\Templates, or, for Word 97, it may be: C:\ProgramFiles\MicrosoftOffice\Templates. For Word 2000, it might be C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates. Write down the exact location of your Templates directory. Exit from Word, back to the Windows 95/98 Desktop.

Click on "START" then "Programs" then "Windows Explorer."
In the left pane, click on the letter for CD-ROM Drive, which is usually D: Click on the + symbol to the left of (D:) to see the folders on the CD-ROM. Doubleclick on "LawDisks" folder. In the right window pane, click on the file "BANKRUPT.DOT" to select it. It should be highlighted in blue. Select Edit Menu, then select Copy. Do not be alarmed if nothing seems to happen just yet. The file has been copied to the Windows clipboard.

Now you find your Word Templates folder. If the folder is named: C:\ProgramFiles\MicrosoftOffice\Templates\, Then you would first double click on Drive C:, Then double click on the folder ProgramFiles which darkens in color, Then doubleclick on the folder MicrosoftOffice which darkens in color Then double click on the folder Templates, which darkens in color.

Now choose the Edit Menu, then choose Paste. The file BANKRUPT.DOT would then be copied into the folder C:\ProgramFiles\MicrosoftOffice\Templates.

Now you can close all these Windows by hitting the X buttons (upper right corners). You do the same for the other two files

Running the Bankrupt Template:

To RUN, start Word. Choose the "File" Menu, then choose "New." When the Dialog Box appears, scroll through the list(s) (there may be Tabs for different groupings) until you see "BANKRUPT," then choose BANKRUPT. Then a copy of the Template Bankrupt is on screen for you to fill in. There are helpful hints and tips at the end of the document. Note: you do not "Open" the actual template file unless you wish to make permanent changes in it (which is possible to do, to customize it for your firm and state).

Note for Word 97 and Word 2000 users: If Word asks you whether you wish to "enable macros" say Yes. The first time you run "Bankrupt," Word will convert the macros to Visual Basic macros. When you are finished, and go to save the first petition you do, Word will ask you if you wish to save "Bankrupt.dot." Answer yes, and answer you wish to overwrite. Then you will not be asked about this again.

Bonus for MS WORD version: you may also use the files BCY_POC.FRM (Proof of Claim form) and "BCY_BUS.FRM" (Business questions, Exhibit A). Open these files in Word, then "Save as" with the format of "Document Templates." After you save them as Templates, you may use copies of them by selecting "File," "New" as above.

Special instructions for users of Microsoft Word 2000:

If you have Microsoft Word, versions 6 or 7, or Word 95 or Word 97, these versions recognize and open any WordPerfect file automatically. However in Word 2000, Microsoft made it intentionally harder for its customers to open WordPerfect files. If you get a message that Word 2000 cannot open a WordPerfect file, then
Word will ask you to insert the CD which contains your copy of Word 2000. This most likely will be a Microsoft Office 2000 CD-ROM. All you have to do is insert this CD, click [OK], and the WordPerfect conversion program will be installed. You will do this only once, and of course it is a big advantage to be able to open WordPerfect files, given the numbers of attorneys who use WordPerfect.

Bonus for MS WORD version: you may also use the files BCY_POC.FRM (Proof of Claim form) and "BCY_BUS.FRM" (Business questions, Exhibit A). Open these files in Word, then "Save as" with the format of "Document Templates." After you save them as Templates, you may use copies of them by selecting "File," "New" as above. ..........Back to Top

There are tips and suggestions are at the end of the document. In WordPerfect 5.1/5.2 for Windows, use the "Insert" "File" menu to put a copy of "BankForm.51" on your screen.

All Other Programs: Almost all programs can read a WordPerfect 5.1 file You should open the file A:\BankForm.51 onto your screen, which is in WordPerfect 5.1 format. If you can open the file (or if you can convert it), then save a copy into your document directory.

Bonus for WordPerfect 5.1 compatible version: you may also use the files BCY_POC.FRM (Proof of Claim form) and "BCY_BUS.FRM" (Business questions, Exhibit A). Insert a copy of these files onto your screen, then fill in.
